Shocked?
So was I, when I first time read about it. We as doctors are hammered about the advantages of breast milk ….. over ….. cow’s milk, goat’s milk, … formula and what not. Giving us a false sense of security that the options are acceptable & safe and there are some benefits with breast milk which one may or may not choose depending on his own preferences or circumstances.
If the mother has less milk, she may choose the other options. If it is inconvenient to her (?!) due to any reason, she may choose some option.
Factually, there are no advantages of breast milk. If a calf drinks cow’s milk, what is the advantage to the calf? If a cub drinks lioness’s milk, what is the advantage to the cub?
If a baby is fed breast milk & is immunised against wide variety of diseases (Pneumonia, diarrhoea or obesity) that is absolutely natural. If a baby is breast fed, she/he gets perfect blend of nutrients, in a easily digestible form, has growth factors for the brain and provides passive immunity, it is nature’s way of increasing chances of survival of a human infant.
Opting any other option than human milk automatically makes human baby vulnerable & that is a disadvantage. If baby is fed formula or cow’s milk, it gets diarrhoea, it is the disadvantage of the choice. The child is more prone to obesity, diabetes, high BP or his / her IQ grows lower than his/her actual potential (as there are no growth factors for brain in any other options), or he/she gets frequent allergies, that is a disadvantage of non human milk.
Does it really make difference whether one calls advantages of breast milk or disadvantages of nonhuman milk? Reread the first paragraph. Yes. With focus on advantages of breastmilk, the gravity of so many disadvantages with nonhuman or top(?) milk is diluted or nullified.
Please read following sentences carefully & think on your own, what impact does each one carries?
If you choose XXX formula, it is fine. If you choose breast milk, you have less chances of getting pneumonia.
If you choose breast milk it is fine. If you choose XXX formula, you have more chances of getting pneumonia.
Which statement will keep a mom away from formulas? So now onwards, whenever you think about comparison between breast milk & any other option, just think about negative aspects of the other options.
There are definite advantages of cow’s milk feeding – to dairy business & formula feeding – to formula (Powdered animal milk) makers. Economic advantages.
